"The Bund at night genuinely took my breath away, all neon towers glowing across the Huangpu like something from a film. Then I spent 45 minutes trying to cross the road via a pedestrian tunnel that smelled faintly of dumplings and despair. The metro is astonishingly efficient but I have never felt so small standing under the Oriental Pearl Tower, like an ant at a science fair.
