"Visited Kirkwall in what the locals called 'a calm day' and I nearly lost my hat, my dignity, and my faith in umbrellas. The Cathedral of St Magnus is genuinely stunning and worth the ferry crossing alone, but do not attempt to photograph it without a windbreaker. Lovely chatty locals in the pubs, decent whisky at Highland Park, but everything shuts by 5pm like the town has a curfew imposed by the North Sea itself.
