Steel City Suburbs

"Where the South meets strip malls"

Official Coat of Arms

A shield divided between a rusty steel beam and a hospital cross, topped by the mighty Vulcan statue giving a thumbs up to an empty downtown street. Flanked by two magic city trolleys that run approximately never, with the motto 'Per Aspera Ad Outlets' inscribed below.

TripAdvisor Review

★★★☆☆ 3/5

"Visited Birmingham expecting more civil rights history, got mostly chain restaurants and medical complexes. The Vulcan statue is pretty cool though, and you can see it from the highway which is convenient since that's where you'll spend most of your time. At least the BBQ was decent and parking is always free."

Twinned With

akron — Both cities peaked in the industrial era and now specialize in convincing people they're 'up and coming' despite evidence to the contrary.

Supporting Evidence

Birmingham has more green space per capita than almost any major U.S. city, which is impressive until you realize it's mostly because so many lots downtown remain mysteriously vacant.
