Base Camp for People Better Than You at Walking
"Where the mountains judge your fitness level silently"
Official Coat of Arms
A shield bearing a pair of muddy hiking boots rampant, a military beret in reference to the nearby camp, above a wavy line representing the Usk, all beneath a banner reading 'Cadair Wait, Wrong Mountain'.
TripAdvisor Review
★★★★☆ 4/5
"Lovely little town but I've never seen so many people in full mountaineering gear just to buy a pint of milk. The cathedral is beautiful and the canal is peaceful, but every cafe conversation is about someone's Pen y Fan personal best. Parking near the Beacons on a Saturday is a competitive sport in itself. Nice enough if you don't mind feeling unfit by comparison."— Gary Thistlewood, Kettering
Property Listing
Charming Georgian market town offering unrivalled access to the Brecon Beacons, ideal for the outdoor enthusiast who enjoys explaining altitude gain to people who didn't ask. Cosy stone cottages, a working canal, and the constant reassuring hum of army vehicles from the nearby barracks.
Twinned With
Chamonix — Both towns are outnumbered by their own mountains and the people obsessed with climbing them.
Supporting Evidence
Brecon hosts an annual jazz festival despite being more commonly associated with squaddies training and people limping back from Pen y Fan.
