Colchester, England

Britain's Oldest Traffic Jam

"Ancient history, modern gridlock"

Official Coat of Arms

A shield featuring a Norman castle surrounded by orange traffic cones, with two rampant estate agents holding 'To Let' signs flanking a central motif of the A12 rendered in perpetual amber. The motto beneath reads 'Camulodunum: Still Here, Still Stuck.'

TripAdvisor Review

★★★☆☆ 3/5

"Visited Colchester to see Britain's oldest recorded town and spent most of my time in Britain's newest traffic jam on the A12. The castle is genuinely impressive, though the one-way system around it seems designed by someone who clearly hated both Romans and modern motorists. At least the charity shops are excellent - picked up three books about local history while waiting for the lights to change."

Colchester's famous one-way system was actually inspired by the Roman street layout, proving that traffic management problems have plagued this town for literally two millennia.
