Harrogate, England
Genteel Bankruptcy-on-Sea
"Where your pension goes to die elegantly"
Official Coat of Arms
A rampant Victorian tearoom rampant upon a field of overpriced car park tickets, supported by two estate agents weeping golden tears. The crest bears a Turkish bath house crowned with a Waitrose shopping bag, symbolising the town's commitment to charging London prices for Yorkshire hospitality.
TripAdvisor Review
★★★☆☆ 3/5
"Visited Harrogate for the famous Turkish Baths and spent £47 on afternoon tea that came with three tiny sandwiches. The town centre is basically one giant antique shop punctuated by charity shops selling other people's antiques. Everyone over 65 looks absolutely thrilled to be there, everyone under 40 looks like they're calculating mortgage payments in their head."— PensionPanic2024 from Milton Keynes

Supporting Evidence
Harrogate's Royal Pump Room Museum houses a sulphur well that Victorian visitors genuinely believed would cure them of ailments, making it possibly Britain's earliest example of paying premium prices for something that tastes absolutely awful while convincing yourself it's good for you.
