Eternal Construction Madrid

"Where the metro works better than the roads"

Official Coat of Arms

A shield divided quarterly, featuring a bear reaching desperately for an air conditioning unit, crossed traffic cones rampant on a field of perpetual roadworks, and a crown surmounting the whole device to represent the monarchy's enduring commitment to ribbon-cutting ceremonies for projects that won't finish until 2087.

TripAdvisor Review

★★★☆☆ 3/5

"Visited Madrid expecting passionate flamenco on every corner, but mostly found passionate arguments about parking spaces. The Prado is magnificent, though you'll need a siesta after queuing in 40-degree heat. Gran Vía looks glamorous until you realize half the shops are closing down for mysterious 'renovations' that last three years. At least the ham is incredible."

Twinned With

Phoenix — Both cities specialize in making tourists question why anyone would build a major metropolis in such punishing heat.

Supporting Evidence

Madrid has been under some form of major construction or renovation continuously since 1978, leading locals to joke that the city's official bird should be the crane rather than anything that actually flies.
