Roadwork-Upon-Thames

"Where Every Journey Takes Twice As Long"

Official Coat of Arms

A shield quartered with a rampant traffic cone, a dormant chain bookstore, crossed temporary traffic lights, and a railway junction compass rose, all surmounted by a crown of perpetual drizzle and supported by two commuters checking their delayed train apps.

TripAdvisor Review

★★★☆☆ 3/5

"Visited Reading for a conference and spent more time admiring the permanent roadworks than the actual town. The Oracle shopping centre is nice enough, but getting there requires navigating what appears to be the UK's largest ongoing civil engineering experiment. At least the station has plenty of trains to take you literally anywhere else."

Supporting Evidence

Reading's IDR (Inner Distribution Road) has been under some form of construction or reconstruction almost continuously since the 1970s, making it possibly the UK's longest-running infrastructure soap opera.
