"Came for the famous Wigan Pier expecting, you know, a pier - got a museum-shaped hole and a canal instead, which is on brand for the town's whole vibe of 'promises things it doesn't have'. The pies at the market were genuinely excellent though, and the DW Stadium crowd on match day has real heart. Town centre's a bit tired and half the shops seem to be vape stores, but the locals will happily explain the George Orwell connection to you unprompted, which is charming in its own way."— Barry Fothergill, Chorley
