Rename My Town

Privacy

A short, honest privacy notice. The TL;DR is: there is barely anything to be private about.

The summary

What your browser stores locally

The site uses your browser's local storage to remember one thing: whether you prefer light or dark mode. That preference never leaves your device. Clearing your browser data removes it.

Separately, the advertising described below may set cookies in your browser. Those are Google's, not ours, and your consent choice is stored so we don't ask you on every page.

Advertising and cookies

This site is free and is paid for by advertising. We use Google AdSense, and this is the honest version of what that means:

Turning personalised ads off

You can opt out of personalised advertising from Google at Google Ads Settings. You can opt out of personalised advertising from many other vendors at once at aboutads.info/choices or youronlinechoices.com. Opting out does not remove the ads — it makes them less relevant.

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works fine with cookies blocked.

If you are in the UK or the EEA

Before any advertising or measurement cookies are set, you will be asked to consent through a consent banner. You can accept, reject, or choose purpose by purpose. Rejecting is a real option: you still get the whole site, and you still get ads, but non-essential cookies will not be set. To change your mind later, use the banner's "manage options" control when it reappears, or clear this site's cookies in your browser and reload — the banner will ask again.

What we send to third parties

To generate a rebrand we send the town name (and the optional country/region you typed) to Anthropic, the company that runs the Claude AI model. Anthropic processes the request under its own privacy policy. We do not send your IP address, your browser fingerprint, or any other personal data along with the request — only the town and country you entered.

Serving ads means your browser also talks directly to Google, which sees your IP address and standard request metadata the way any third-party resource on any website does. That exchange is governed by Google's privacy policy for partner sites. We do not pass Google the town you typed or anything else you entered.

The site is hosted by a third-party hosting provider, which sees standard request metadata (IP, user agent, referrer) for any website it serves, governed by its own privacy policy.

What gets stored, and for how long

Children

The site is not aimed at children and does not knowingly collect data from them.

Your rights

If a rebrand for a town you care about — or a recent-rebrands entry showing a town you typed — makes you uncomfortable, get in touch and we will remove it. The same applies to anything else you would like removed.

Changes to this notice

If we change this page in any meaningful way, the new version will be visible at renamemy.com/privacy.
