Stroud, England

Steep Hills & Lentil Mills

"Where gravity meets granola"

Official Coat of Arms

A field of organic kale surmounted by a rampant vintage bicycle, with a chief bearing five golden Cotswold stone cottages perched at alarming angles. The supporters shall be two hemp-clad figures, one clutching a reusable coffee cup, the other a pottery wheel, both standing courageously upon a steep escarpment.

TripAdvisor Review

★★★☆☆ 3/5

"Visited Stroud for a weekend break and my calves are still recovering from the hills. Every street seems to be at a 45-degree angle! The town centre has more wholefood shops than actual food shops, and I counted seven people in tie-dye just walking to the car park. The farmers market was brilliant though, and the canal walk is lovely once you've caught your breath."

San Francisco — Both cities believe that building everything on impossible hills somehow adds character rather than just leg pain.

Supporting Evidence

Stroud's hills are so steep that the town once had a water-powered public tramway system to help residents get up and down them, operating from 1892 to 1933.
